How could Jesus' parents leave him in Jerusalem?
When traveling long distances it was safer for families to caravan together. It was also custom for the men and women to walk separately and often the children would play together. This created time for male and female bonding. How could have Joseph and Mary left Jerusalem without Jesus? They each likely assumed Jesus was with the other parent and at the end of the day when they regathered to set up camp for the night, they discovered Jesus wasn't with them. It can also be assumed Jesus was a well-mannered, responsible, young teen that didn't need constant supervision. Even good parents have their moments!
