Roman soldiers were professional executioners. They knew how to torture and inflict maximum pain and suffering and yet also prolong the victim's death. Jesus' outstretched hands and feet are nailed on a cross and He hangs between two thieves. Naked, bloody and suffering from the stripes laid on His back and the sins of the world heaped upon Him, He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. There was no other way. He is the only Way, the Truth, and the Life.
