At the beginning of Matthew 24 Jesus predicts the temple, known as Herod's Temple because he paid to have it completely enlarged and enhanced, would one day be completely destroyed. That came true in A.D. 70 when the Romans ransacked Jerusalem to squelch an insurrection and entered the city and destroyed the temple. There are actually four Temples that Scripture speaks of. The first was built by King Solomon, Solomon's Temple. It was destroyed by the Babylonians. Eventually after the 70 year exile, the Jews returned to Jerusalem and built a second Temple in 586 B.C. It was this Temple that Herod, approximately 600 years later, added to it and built it into the magnificent building standing during the ministry of Christ. It was then utterly destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. There has not been a Jewish Temple since. But the Bible prophecies that there are two more temples yet to be built. A third temple will be built before the Messiah returns for His saints. The fourth temple, or "Millennial Temple" is prophesied by Ezekiel (40-45) and will be during the "Millennial Reign" of Christ described in Revelation 20.
